Stone Creek vs On Top of the World vs The Villages vs SummerGlen: Which Ocala Golf Community Actually Fits Your Life

I am going to be upfront about something before we get into this comparison. I am 31 years old. I have played Candler Hills, I have had listings in On Top of the World, and I have sold in The Villages. But I have not retired to one of these communities and I do not have a personal experience of what the day to day life inside them feels like at 62 or 68 or 74.

What I do have is a genuine understanding of what makes each of these communities different from a real estate standpoint, honest observations from time spent inside each of them, and enough self awareness to tell you when you should be talking to a resident rather than just taking my word for it. I think that kind of transparency is more valuable than an agent who pretends to know everything.

With that said, here is my honest read on four of the most significant active adult and golf communities in the Ocala region and how to think about which one might actually fit your life.

On Top of the World

On Top of the World is the largest golf community in Marion County and one of the most well known active adult communities in the entire state of Florida. I have had listings here and I have spent real time inside the community. The amenities are genuinely impressive, the activity calendar is relentless in the best possible way, and the social infrastructure that OTOW has built over decades is something newer communities are still trying to replicate.

Here is my honest observation though. OTOW runs a tight ship. The rules are real, the HOA enforcement is serious, and the community has a structure to it that some people find deeply comforting and others find genuinely restrictive. I personally lean toward the latter but I recognize that is a 31 year old talking and that the buyers who thrive in OTOW are people who actually appreciate that level of organization in their community. It keeps the property values consistent, it keeps the common areas immaculate, and it creates the kind of predictable environment that a lot of retirees are specifically looking for.

The Candler Hills section within the broader OTOW footprint offers a more upscale feel with larger homes and a slightly quieter atmosphere. The Candler Hills Golf Club is the marquee course for this area and it plays beautifully. If you want the OTOW infrastructure but prefer a bit more breathing room and a higher end home, Candler Hills is worth a separate look from the main community.

Best for: Buyers who want maximum amenities, a deeply active social calendar, and appreciate a well organized community with consistent standards.

Stone Creek by Del Webb

Stone Creek is the newer master planned answer to On Top of the World and the comparison between the two comes up constantly when I am working with buyers in this price range. Del Webb brought their signature discipline to this community and it shows. Wide streets, consistent architecture, a well maintained 18 hole championship course, and amenities that feel fresh because in many cases they genuinely are.

The feel here is a bit more relaxed than OTOW in my experience. Still very much a managed community with real HOA expectations, but the culture around it feels slightly more laid back. Whether that is because the community is newer and the membership has not fully settled into its rhythms yet or whether it is something more structural I honestly could not tell you with certainty. What I can tell you is that the buyers I have talked to who toured both communities and chose Stone Creek often mention that it felt a little less like a corporation and a little more like a neighborhood.

The Del Webb brand also carries a national resale track record that matters if you are thinking about your long term equity position. These communities hold value well because the brand is trusted and the buyer pool for a Del Webb resale is predictable and active.

Best for: Buyers who want the full amenity package of an active adult community but prefer a slightly more modern feel and a community culture that leans a bit more relaxed.

The Villages

The Villages is in a category by itself and I think it is worth acknowledging that upfront. This is not just a golf community. It is one of the largest planned retirement communities in the United States, spanning multiple counties and continuing to expand. I have had a listing there and spending time inside The Villages is genuinely unlike any other community in Florida.

The scale is almost hard to process until you are actually inside it. Dozens of golf courses. Multiple town squares with live entertainment every night. A transportation system within the community so you can get around by golf cart without ever getting in a car. A social calendar that would overwhelm most people under 60 just reading it. Everything you could need is either inside The Villages or within a very short drive of its edges.

The tradeoff for all of that is also scale. The Villages can feel more like a destination than a neighborhood. It is harder to know everyone and the community dynamic is less intimate than a smaller development. Real estate prices here reflect the brand premium and the lifestyle on offer, and the resale market is consistently active because the demand for entry into The Villages has not slowed down meaningfully in years.

If maximum lifestyle infrastructure and the ability to never run out of things to do is your priority, The Villages is genuinely unmatched in this region. If you want something smaller and more personal, keep reading.

Best for: Buyers who want the most complete self contained retirement lifestyle available in Florida and are comfortable with the scale and the price point that comes with it.

SummerGlen

SummerGlen is the one on this list that does not always come up in the same conversation as the others and that gap in awareness is genuinely its greatest asset right now. I have played the course and I have spent time in the community and what I found was something that the larger communities on this list have mostly traded away in exchange for scale: a sense of actually knowing your neighbors.

SummerGlen is smaller, the golf course is enjoyable without being a destination layout, and the community culture is genuinely warm in a way that does not feel manufactured. The price points are more accessible than The Villages or the higher end sections of OTOW, and the lifestyle on offer is still very much a full active adult golf community experience. You are just living it with fewer people around you and a stronger sense of actual community.

For buyers who have toured the bigger communities and felt slightly overwhelmed by the sheer size of everything, SummerGlen is worth an afternoon of your time before you commit. It delivers a quieter, more personal version of the same active adult golf lifestyle and buyers who end up there tend to be very happy with the trade.

Best for: Buyers who want the active adult golf community lifestyle but prefer a smaller, more intimate community where you actually get to know the people around you.

How to Actually Decide

My honest recommendation for any buyer trying to choose between these communities is the same thing I say about golf course home buying in general. You have to spend time inside them before you commit. Tour the amenities on a weekday. Have lunch at the clubhouse. Walk the neighborhood at different times of day. Talk to residents who have no reason to sell you anything.

Each of these communities has a personality and the only way to know whether that personality fits yours is to experience it firsthand rather than rely on a website or a brochure or even an agent who tells you what you want to hear.

I am happy to be that resource for you throughout the process, to help you understand the real estate side of any of these communities and to give you my honest read on what I have seen and experienced in each of them. What I will not do is pretend I know exactly which one is right for your life better than you do after spending a weekend inside it.
