If you have been searching for a golf course home in central Florida, chances are you have heard Ocala come up more than once. And for good reason. Marion County has quietly become one of the most compelling places in the state to buy a golf course property, offering championship caliber courses, mature communities, and price points that still make sense before the rest of the country catches on.
I have played and walked virtually every course in this area. Here is my honest, no fluff guide to the golf communities that are actually worth your time, ranked the way a local would rank them.
Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club
This is the crown jewel of Marion County golf and it is not particularly close. Golden Ocala is a private, members only club with replica holes modeled after the most iconic holes in the world, Augusta National, St Andrews, Cypress Point, and Pebble Beach among them. The course is stunning, the conditioning is elite, and the real estate surrounding it reflects that. Homes here carry a prestige that no other golf community in this area can match.
If you are a serious golfer who wants to live inside one of the finest private clubs in Florida, Golden Ocala is the answer. Membership is required and exclusive, which is exactly the point.
Best for: Buyers who want the absolute top of the market in Marion County golf living.
Juliette Falls — Dunnellon
Juliette Falls is a Ron Garl designed championship course and one of the finest layouts in the entire region. Golf Magazine named it one of the top ten best new courses in the United States in 2008. Golf Week ranked it 6th best in Florida in 2011. This is a genuine 7,239 yard par 72 track with four waterfalls, dramatic elevation changes, and fairways framed by mature pine and oak. It is not a resort course dressed up as a community course. It is the real thing.
The real estate surrounding Juliette Falls ranges from modest to genuinely luxurious, and the Dunnellon location puts you close to both the Rainbow River and the Withlacoochee River. That combination of world class golf and immediate access to Florida’s Nature Coast waterways is something you simply cannot find anywhere else in the state.
Best for: Serious golfers who want quality course design and the bonus of Florida’s Nature Coast lifestyle right down the road.
Terra Vista at Citrus Hills
Just across the Hernando and Citrus County border but absolutely worth including for anyone casting a wider net. Terra Vista offers multiple courses, a full country club, and a lifestyle that leans heavily toward the luxury end. The community is larger and more resort like than most on this list, and the amenities including spa, multiple restaurants, tennis, and fitness reflect that investment.
Price points run higher here than the Marion County options but buyers who tour it rarely argue with the value for what is included. If you want the full resort lifestyle with golf as one of several premium amenities, Terra Vista delivers it.
Best for: Buyers looking for a full service resort lifestyle with golf at the center of it.
Country Club of Ocala
The Country Club of Ocala carries an old Florida prestige that the newer communities simply cannot replicate. This is a long established private club with a traditional membership structure and a beautiful course that has served the Ocala community for decades. The homes surrounding the club tend to be larger, more established properties with mature landscaping and a neighborhood feel that newer master planned communities are still building toward.
If you appreciate classic club culture, real relationships with fellow members, and a course that has stood the test of time, the Country Club of Ocala belongs on your list.
Best for: Buyers who value tradition, established community, and private club culture.
Black Diamond Ranch
Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto is one of those courses that serious golfers make a point of playing at least once. Tom Fazio designed the quarry course using the dramatic limestone terrain of old mining land, creating something that looks and plays unlike anything else in Florida. The elevation changes are unlike anything you expect to find in this part of the state.
The residential community surrounding Black Diamond is private and gated, with a membership requirement that keeps the atmosphere exclusive. Homes here are spread across a large property with significant lot sizes and a genuine sense of privacy. If seclusion and world class course design matter to you, Black Diamond delivers both.
Best for: Buyers who want dramatic course design, serious privacy, and a one of a kind living environment.
On Top of the World with Candler Hills
On Top of the World is the largest golf community in Marion County and one of the most active 55 plus communities in all of Florida. Multiple championship courses anchor a lifestyle that is fully built out with a full activity calendar, fitness centers, pools, and a social scene that genuinely never slows down.
Within On Top of the World, Candler Hills deserves a specific mention. Candler is a more upscale section of the community with larger homes, higher end finishes, and a slightly quieter atmosphere while still having full access to all On Top of the World amenities. Buyers who want the energy of a big active community but prefer a bit more breathing room in the home itself often land in Candler.
Homes across both sections range from villas to larger single family properties, and the price range is wide enough that buyers at different budgets can find a fit. The resale volume here is consistently strong, which matters when you are thinking about your exit strategy as much as your lifestyle.
Best for: Active buyers who want a full service community with golf, amenities, and a built in social life.
Stone Creek by Del Webb
Stone Creek is the newer master planned answer in the Ocala 55 plus golf market. Del Webb brought their signature design approach here, wide streets, consistent architecture, and a well maintained 18 hole championship course that plays beautifully year round.
What I hear from buyers who tour both Stone Creek and On Top of the World is that Stone Creek feels more polished and modern while On Top of the World has more of an established community energy. Neither is wrong. It comes down to what stage of life you are in and what kind of neighbors you are looking for.
Best for: Buyers who want a newer build feel with all the 55 plus amenities already in place.
Other Great Courses Worth Knowing in the Area
Not every great round of golf in Marion County happens inside a gated community. The area is home to a strong collection of public and semi private courses that give buyers and residents plenty of options for mixing up their game and meeting new people on the course.
- Ocala Golf Club — One of the oldest and most storied public courses in the city. A true local institution that has welcomed Ocala golfers for generations.
- ZenSprings Golf Club — The revitalized course in Dunnellon near Rainbow Springs with new ownership, Toptracer technology, night golf, and a great local atmosphere through the Tap In Tavern concept. Casual and fun.
- ZenWoods Golf Club — A nine hole par 3 boutique experience in Inverness with Toptracer bays, glow golf, live music, and a completely different vibe than your traditional round. Worth trying at least once.
- Royal Oaks Golf Club — A solid semi private option in the Ocala area that delivers a quality round without the full private membership commitment.
- Silver Springs Shores — A community course that has served southeast Ocala for years. Accessible, friendly, and great for getting a quick round in without making a whole production of it.
- Adena Golf and Country Club — Super private and intentionally so. One of the more exclusive clubs in the region. If you know, you know.
What to Ask Before You Buy in Any Golf Community
After working with buyers across all of these communities, the questions that matter most are not about the course rating. They are about the finances.
- What are the HOA fees and what do they cover? In some communities course access is included. In others you are paying membership on top of HOA.
- Is the course privately owned or community owned? This matters enormously for long term maintenance and resale value.
- What is the mandatory membership structure? Some communities require golf membership whether you play or not. Know this before you fall in love with a home.
- What are homes actually selling for, not listing for? I track sold data across all of these communities in real time. The list price tells you nothing. The sold price tells you everything.
